I am new to the AR community but I was in the process of researching my next purchase when i came across this site. I looked at some previous posts and have learned a lot but I felt it was necessary for me to go ahead and start a new thread for my search. I am looking at getting a new AR 10 .308 or similar model. I will use it for larger game hunting in Texas, such as deer and hogs. I am looking to spend around $2K total. I need something durable that is still accurate for about 200 yards or so. I don't really need many accessories on it yet but a recommendation for a quality scope at a reasonable price would also be greatly appreciated. It should not be hard to assemble an AR-10 in .308 within your stated budget.
Any AR-10 will be accurate enough for hunting at 200 yards with an inexpensive low-powered scope. But, why would you put inferior optics on a superior rifle? A mid-range priced scope from a quality manufacturer like Leupold, Nikon or Zeiss, will do fine in 3-9 power at that range.

Thanks, I wasn't planning on putting a cheap scope on it. I was just looking for some recommendations or preferred scopes that weren't priced outrageously. Any more specifics on where to assemble my AR or preferred companies? If you had my price range and my few requirements, what would you do? What about some of the companies that have their own custom models (i.e. Rock River Arms.....)? I would really appreciate and suggestions, ideas, or personal experience in the area.

Hello, and welcome to the site, I would say for your needs, you can pick up an ArmaLite AR-10 A4, Standard, with a 20" barrel for around 1300 to 1400 depending where you get it. You may want to just order one. The AR-10s are easier to get right now over the M-15s. My local dealer has two in stock....one black, one green furniture. They are running 1340.00 per gun. For an optic, well that is a long road to travel......I would say, Standard Scope.....about 650.00. I have a Leupold mark 2, for the range you are talking, that would be more than adequate. but if you are looking for a longer-range scope, check out the video in GD.....picture and vid section, on the Shepard scopes.

After reading the first post and being bored today I started pricing AR-10's. I checked Rock River first and I read they use a special Reciever thread and barrel nut. Anyone knowwhy they do this? Is there a problem with standard reciever threadbarrel nut failure in the AR-10?

I've never heard of any barrel nut failures on AR10's before. New to me. I'm sure Rock River have their own reasons for doing what they do, but I couldn't imagine why.

If I remember my conversations with ArmaLite, and the other research I have done, Not only is ArmaLite the odd man out, but RRA is also, they had their own design for their barrel nut, if you want, I could see if I could find the data as to whom is whom, as far as any failure, none that I have heard.

A prime example...........railed hand guards....free float or standard
MI= Armalite, standard drop in...
LaRue...Free Float....SR25 and Dpms and ArmaLite
as for the RRA,,,,,,,not sure who makes them......it all has to do with the teeth on the nut.....unless you go FreeFloat, then that is a whole new ball game.....
Not sure on JP Enterprise....that's IP's area.....
Magazines.......
ArmaLite and Noveske.....I think, they look like the same, would have to check with Noveske,
KAC.....125.00.....and DPMS...30.00 but both the same design.
RRA, on its own......
I have a friend that owns two RRA, I could get some more info if you need it..
Just one more addition to this, KAC uses both designs so to speak, the uppers are like that of the ArmaLite, but it will except DPMS mags....

and why I am at it......

Just got this from Noveske....YEP, they use ArmaLite AR-10 Mags...

The N6 uses AR-10 mags.

That's a shocker! I would never have thought Noveske would stoop to putting suck ass Armalite mags in their rifles...

Before you say it, don't. I just hate the damn things and yes, I do have Gen. II mags in addition to the crappy modified mags for M14's. Just my .02 worth.

Thanks for the help guys! I finally ordered my Armalite AR-10 A4 last week. It should be here in a few days. I'm still working on which scope I want to put on it. My new question is now what my first addition to it will be (other than the scope). I have about $500 to spend and I'm thinking at least a handguard but there are so many choices. I would really appreciate some more suggestions on what I should add first or some recommendations on which handguards. Thanks for all the help guys and I'm glad to be a part of the forum. I'll add some pictures soon!
