Why get a M-79 when you can get a M-203 to fit under your
AR. It's 37mm, does not require a tax stamp unless you plan of using rounds considered to be DDs. Every round that is not a flare, smoke, or 12 gauge 'wildlife control cartridge' is considered a
DD. Furthermore, a 12 gauge adapter inserted into a 37mm launcher is considered to be a
DD. I also don't think that the M-203 launcher with a 12 gauge adapter firing a 12 gauge round is a good idea because I don't think the launcher was designed to handle that much kickback. The wildlife control cartridges are made by blammo, along with other interesting rounds and by themselves are not considered DDs. Of course they were intended for use in a shotgun, not an adapter. I got this info over the phone directly from
BATF while requesting paperwork for a homebuilt sound supressor. They were fery cordial and helpful. Basically if you have a clean rcord and pay the tax stamp you can do almost anything, incluting owning a tank with armorment, or a Cobra AH with armorment. Obviously these items are really big bucks. Also, what looks better hanging on the wall when guests come over, an M-79 or an
AR with a M-203 with handguards, sights, and a bayonet? Certainly makes for great conversation, and is easily romoved to restore it to its original configuration and removed to a gunsafe and brought out for special occasions. Also, 37mm expended shells can be reloaded with smoke or flares and used without being a
DD, or if you wish to break the law, reloaded with just about anything else including wooden dowels, bean bags, nails or anything that could hurt someone (not that a flare or smoke grenade couldn't). Cobray makes the 37mm launcher not only in the M-203 style, but other configurations as well. 37mm.com (recently sold to another party) has more info. John
