Has anyone had any of their stuff Duracoated with 48-Gold or 37-Gold Coast? I'm looking for examples of it to see how it looks. I'm going to create some samples for a friend in TX with the lone star symbol on some mags with the TX flag on the opposing side. I know there are stipulations with the gold, it required a top coat which I'm fine with and I think in my experimenting with it I'm also going to try a bottom coat of 21-White to see what the outcome of that would be. But before I experiment I'm looking for examples and help on the matter. Thanks

When a friend of mine retires from the Army, I'm thinking about buying a Colt 1911 and having it plated in Gold with some inscriptions for his retirement gift. I don't think 'painted' gold would look right???

I was thinking of getting a used Colt that could be turned into a commemorative display piece. He served several tours in combat and I'd do it up right. I'm trying to figure out what painted gold would look like, but I think this piece needs to be more display quality than serviceable. Actually, silver plating may make more sense to match his retirement rank which would be included in the shadow box. Someday, I'll need yours and Gunrunner's input on how to do this display up right for a hero.

BTW, you guys deserve the same.

All comemorative guns that I've seen passed off to retiring SGM's and Team Sgt's have either been the chrome Colt Army Revolver or are the nickel 1911's. If you are wanting to go out there and get the gold/silver combination, I think that having a clean slide for engravings would be a start. Having the frame and slide done it Gold would be great and having the pins, safety, slide lock....etc. done in silver or chrome would be a good accent. Me personally, I don't care too much for bling so gold would be a bit much however doing it in Silver or Chrome like you had said to match the rank would look nice and to break up the brightness of it have the pins, safety, slide lock....etc. done in a gloss black. The grips are endless for it, you can get companies out there to engrave or carve anything into them you'll just have to shop around. A nice set of black grips would look sharp on a chrome 1911.

I've gotten 14 more years at a minimum before I retire and hopefully I'll be sitting pretty for retirement as a CW3 if my career plan follows that I have laid out for myself. Right now I'm shopping around for a job as a sniper instructor.

How many sniper schools are there? When I was serving (up until a few months ago) there was only one at that one was at Fort Benning where I was stationed. I'm assuming that you have the B4 designator as well? I did all of my training (with the exception of Air Assault) at Benning. Boot camp, Airborne School, Ranger School, and sniper school were all done in one place one after the other.

Not to hijack the thread IP, but he might be talking about private schools, of which there are numerous companies that offer "sniper/precision rifle" training. (Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, Mid-west are just a couple of examples of training centers that offer that training program. The do alot of work with LE and Gov't contractors as well as spec ops groups.)

There is still the Army Sniper School ran by TRADOC at Ft Benning, There is another I believe TRADOC combined Marine/National Guard ran in Arkansas. SOCOM has their level 1 and level 2 Sniper Courses or SOTIC/SFSC (Level 2 is SOTIC "Special Operations Target Interdiction Course" and Level 1 is SFSC "Special Forces Sniper Course") SFSC is ran out of Ft Bragg and each group has their own internally ran SOTIC, 1st group is in Ft Lewis, 3rd and 7th groups are in Ft Bragg, 5th group is at Ft Campbell and 10th is at Ft Carson. SFSC is the only one that gives an identifier. SOTIC is strictly a training school to prepare an individual for SFSC.

I wish, I was pulling "Sniper Overwatch" today on a mock hit with my counterpart here on this JCET and he pulled his SIG SSG 3000 out of the back of his blacked out burban with his Schmidt and Bender scope on it while I sat there with "Ole Faithful" my M24 with Leupold Mark IV scope. But I've been to both SOCOM sniper schools and I'm thinking about trying my hand at teaching at the one in Ft Campbell sometime soon as a break and career progression.
