Let me say that the new site is awesome, I noticed there's a new Duracoat section and I thought that I would share some of my projects and plan on keeping up on future projects.

This is my personal AR-15 that I kind of went overboard on, so I did it up in a satin black to mimic an airsoft gun.

This next one is an AR-15 I put together for my dad and a few magazines I did to match. It was my first attempt at doing a multi-color weapon.

The final one is a work I have in progress, the wife has had me busy with the new house and her honey-do lists since I got back from Iraq. This is a project I'm doing for a friend in the Airforce. I don't have a picture of it yet, but I'm also putting the Airforce symbol on the rear of the charging handle in white as well, and of course where the green is will remain white while the rest of the AR-15 will be sprayed in a matte black.

I'll keep up with this project and I have another co-worker who is going to allow my to try my hand at doing a Multi-cam pattern on a few of his firearms.

Awesome work.

I wish one of you painters would post a step by step on how to do this. The materials and all. I woulld love to paint mine up but I am a do-it-yourselfer and would never send it out to be done.

Splat, where are you in TN? I'm stationed at Ft. Campbell and could help you get started if you were close enough and once Iget my work area set up. I'm just back from Iraq and still trying to get my work area set up in the new house. PM me if you don't want to give out your location.

It isn't hard. It can be tedious. The shottie (the yellow, green, and black) that I did was a complete disassembly and I had over 30 hours in it. It was also a job that I charged $300 dollars for. I also did it in a week. I spent a lot of time on it.

All you need is an airbrush or one of their little finishing kits. The best thing to do, if you can Gunrunner can't hook up would be to buy the DVD that they sell. It also comes with their camopacks as well.

Gunrunner: Looks great! I remember the pics of the AR-15 for your father, end result came out looking very good, especially for a first attempt.

If nobody else does it, when the library opens, I'll do an extensive, in depth guide myself, and will probably supplement some info to a supplied guide either way, as I have some unique experience in it, especially when it comes to masking. I may also upload plans to my duracoating cabinet.

Splat, let me get set up and then we can work something out. I just went out today and got a 5 gal Craftsman air compressor and a new Kobalt gravity fed spray gun to add to my air brush and hobby compressor. I'll be sure to run you off a copy of the duracoat video as well.

Holy Crap Gunrunner. That AR looks great. I was just popping-in for a second or two. Work has me on the East coast, working 16 hours a day for the next 6 months. I am up to my knees in snow, and my place in CA at the beach is calling my name..... 6 months... Anyhow, I saw that AR and just had to comment. That is amazing.

Right now is a good time to start. People want painted guns. You can see it more and more from the manufactures but... people are wanting custom, people are wanting different. I can survive on local business for a couple of years. Eventually I hoping that word of mouth will increase my business from farther away. I would love to spend the rest of my working days doing this. It's a lot of fun and I look forward to getting started everyday.

I have an air compressor and some basic artistic talent. What I want to know is:

What spray gun should I buy etc etc.

I would love to hear about the prep process but I imagine it involves degreasing and taping off everything, disassembling etc.

I am off for the next 5 days. I plan on making my man cave/ garage into a painting booth. I want to study this hobby as it seems like it can be gotten into for not too much cash. It can't be any more expensive than reloading.

I haven't figured out how to make money building ARs, which I would love to do. I just can't figure out how to make it profitable. That would be my dream job- Building ARs all day.

Maybe building custom painted ARs.

If I could figure it out I would get the FFL and all the legal paper work. I would walk away from my current career in a heart beat (no pun intended)

You can use the cheap HVLP from Harbor Freight. Me personally, I use an Airbrush because it doesn't use as much of the Duracoat in the process. I've decided to change the rifle in my Avatar so I'll be starting a process of painting it as well.

The process does involve degreasing and taping off and everything like that. I'm doing a complete paint job on my rifle so I'll describe in detail what I'm doing. Also, if you watch those videos that I posted a link too, they show you the entire process from start to finish.

The prep work that I do is ask the customerto clean the weapon as best as they can, then when I get it I further clean it and disassemble it to get it realy clean. Once this is done the rubber gloves go on, once I clean them I don't touch them by hand again. I take them out and start degreasing them with Duracoat's TruStrip. Once that is done and wiped down I prep it with a phosphorus spray that Lauer offers. I follow the directions on the bottle, and allow the phosphorus to remain wet on the metal for 5 mins. Once the 5 mins are up, I'll either load thebig sprayer with water and start cleaning off the phos from the weapon while I run the phos cleaner through my air brush or I'll dunk the weapon a few times in water to get the phos off. Then it's time to coat the weapon with a base coat. I'll mist the weapon with 4-7 coats going lightly so there isn't any build up or runs. It's time consuming but it gets the job done right. and then from there I either start masking or if it's a simple one color job then i'm done.
