The Navy is testing two new camouflage uniforms. Look at the rules of who and when they can be worn. How freaking stupid is that? BDU's now have rules of engagement.

On a lighter note, the following Navy uniform candidates were put together for testing stressing flexibility, smart colors, and wearability. The final test during the selection phase was this video:

The Marine Corps was asked if they wanted a new MARPAT uniform based on the selection since they are a department of the Navy. The Marines responded, "While we are a department of the Navy; we are the Men's Department; and therefore, decline the Navy's invitation to share in a new uniform."

One also has to wonder (since they admitted the blue digital was not for camouflage) what the survival rates of man-overboard would be now that their standard uniform is only good camouflage against water?

You know, Foxtrot, I've been asking that same goddamned question since I first heard about the NWU bullshit.

The whole point of going to the NWU was to reduce the load on the sailor, by making the number of uniforms he had to purchase for his seabag smaller. This is an incredibly fucking retarded thing. They have instead made his seabag LARGER instead, making the sailor purchase a whole cubic ass load MORE uniforms.

CDR Salamander is one of my favorite milbloggers, and as the name might suggest, he's fairly Navy-centric. He - and most of the rest of the Navy - have been bitching about the NWU thing - and the retards at Task Force Uniform that were behind it - for years.

I always found that blue camo to be funny. It was to be worn by those attached to the fleet, but like you say, it's only camo against water. I don't think anyone thought through the SAR aspect of a MOB incident. So, WTF does a swabbie need camo for? Wouldn't a solid color that matches the ship be the best for those on board if they actually did need it? I can hear it now...."Hey! It doesn't look like anyone is on board that 500-foot long ship over there! Let's get it!" Now, I understand SeAL and EOD need something, but Cookie?

SEALs and EOD would still not be wearing the NWU. They'd be wearing most likely Desert or Woodland BDU's.

The Navy, these days, has really ushered in a whole new era of stupid. It's what happens when your rank pyramid turns into an hourglass instead.

When I was in, they were really working hard to up the level of stupid. At Surface Warfare Officer School they showed us the career progression path in a powerpoint from PERS-41, and they explained that at the 4-year mark, about 82% of us would likely get out of the Navy for one reason or another, so they were commissioning that many extra people, so that they'd have the right number available at that time. An expectant hush came over the room when someone asked why, instead of commissioning all the extra warm bodies, they didn't just solve the problems that were causing 82% attrition and save the extra money. The sound of crickets and tumbleweeds dominated, until the drone from BUPERS changed the slide and continued.

Ya, I was trolling a little bit there. Just trying to get squids and jarheads going at it a bit.

It amazes me that they are restricting the "when and where" certain troop types can wear a certain set of camo. Too many rules. Just call for class a or b, or utility, ceremonial, or whatever, but now it's going to be, "ok you guys can wear this only if training off base, and you guys can wear it only if being shot at while transitioning war zones, and you guys can't wear it at all unless..." They are going to have to hand out pamphlets and vouchers to keep em straight and help em pay for it.

ok so the other day i saw USN personnel wearing both gold and silver name tapes. At first I thought it was officer/noncom but i swear that they were both 0-3.... anyone?

I've been out for a while, but I've never seen a silver name tape on an officer. But then, the only things I had to put name tapes on were coveralls. No NWU or BDU's or anything like that.

Camouflage for sailors? If an enemy could get close enough to a ship to see the sailers in their white "cracker-jacks" or "prison blues" then they should already be dead.

Being a cheap bastard I wonder why not enough taxpayers are bitching about the wasted money having Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines wearing their own style and patterns of uniform.

Coming from the perspective of never having been in, but having lots of family who have, I see it as a stupid waste of money. How about one style of BDU for all services and let the brass play dress-up in whatever fancy uniform they want. Why put the patch indicating which service you're in across from your name patch if you are wearing a unique uniform anyway? U-n-i-f-o-r-m. Isn't that supposed to mean "all the same"? It'd be a whole lot cheaper to issue the same Desert Digital and Forest Digital to all branches.
