USPS is another story, I personally wouldn't try to ship ammunition through the postal service - I don't think you can, but I may be mistaken. What I was talking about with ORM-D is Fedex/
UPS/Common Carriers. While it falls under hazmat regulations (CFR 173) it does not fall under the usual stuff - so you can drop it off at the Fedex/
UPS hub (
UPS stores, 3rd party contractors will not accept) or do a pickup,
you do not need to pay the hazmat surcharge ($22.50) and all you need is an "ORM-D" label with cartridges, small arms written on it. They ship via regular ground, the ORM-D classifies them as hazmat although for the most part they are treated as regular packages. Again, you can find a picture of these labels online and print them out and stick it to your box. ORM-D Consumer Commodity is also accepted (Thats how the
CMP ships) but it's not exactly "correct".
You can only ship to the 48 States - no Hawaii or Alaska even if your in Hawaii or Alaska (don't ask me..) You can ship into Canada, but Canada can't ship back. Also, you cannot ship through Canada - if it enters, it has to be delivered in Canda. Lots of little
BS regulations. It has to be via Ground shipment only.
If the clerk at the HUB of either fedex or
UPS gives you hell, make them call about it. You will get it cleared up quickly and avoid problems caused by an uneducated clerk. Fedex may or may not require you to have a valid account number before they will let you ship ORM-D (but you do not need to be hazmat certified).
For packaging: Just needs to be a box with the proper corner crush rating. I'll pull the book for that, there's a round label printed on one end of most boxes you can buy (walmart even) that lists various crush test ratings.
IIRC 32 inch pounds corner crush covers up to 20lbs, I'll have to pull my book later to get the rest of them.
