I think this is why it is a good idea to have eye protection on as well as ear protection when out shooting. You never know, shit happens.

Been there done that...got the t-shirt. Also had a round pretty much weld itself in the bore. This is why if you're shooting an AK in a foriegn country make sure that you know exactly where the ammo came from and not just out of a bunker or box of extras.

Can't say what happened or what caused it.

OOB's can happen for a variety of reasons, often times slam fires before the bolt is locked. Meaning, the primer gets set off before the trigger is pulled. Can be caused by all sorts of things - firing pin breaking, primer too soft or corroded or some damage, bad or excessive headspace. In rare cases, something besides the firearm mechanism setting it off - one SKS shooter was killed by a double feed OOB (second round fed into primer of first round semi-chambered).

OOB's can also be caused by mechanical failure. Like if you break a lug off, or other true mechanical failures - some would make abnormal effects, like I'm not sure what would happen if your forward trunnion broke on an AK. Probably be bad..

Case failures are also possible, resulting in a lot of gas blowback (maybe even enough to blow the cover off as shown) but they are not quite as bad so long as the bolt is locked - at least some pressure is expended out the barrel. May have even been what happened here, I can't say by looking at it.

I've only ever had one OOB in my career with factory ammo and it basically blew the rifle apart. Info on that is in another thread (carbine) so I won't relate it here.

I had a incident with a Norinco SKS when I was about 18 I guess. I was shooting some chinese ammo and one of the rounds had a very mild thud compared to the other rounds. Sounded like a boomp instead of a loud boom. I thought that just didn't sound right. I had never had experience with really any kind of failures at that point other than a .22 stove piping . I stopped to see what happened and that round logged several inches down the barrel. I had to use the cleaning rod and knock it back out the chamber end. If I had fired another round it could have been just as ugly as this incident or worse. I hope I never experience one blowing up in my face like that. I think I still have the round somewhere. I still have a box of the same type of ammo that I'm scared to shoot.

Squib load! That is the usual name. A base case could cause it but usually its bad primer, bad powder, or inconsistant load. It also doesn't have to get lodged in the barrel to be called a squib load.

Generally, it's safer to have one on a full auto/semi auto than it is something like a revolver. Because, these gas operated rifles NEED the gas pressure in order to cycle the next round - so it will almost always prevent the next round from loading on its own. If your paying attention, you'll ask "why did that sound funny" and save your life in the process (heaven help the people who are deaf) but with something like a revolver.. if someone is rapidly pumping out rounds with a DA, and a bullet lodges 2" down the barrel because it didn't have a powder charge.. well, the next cartridge is going to line up anyway and go off right into the back of it and cause a pretty big OP and handgun fail.

Just things to consider. Most people tend to think squibs are incredibly dangerous on semi-autos vs things like revolvers (I've had them happen to me too, but I only shoot automatics) but the reverse is usually true, so long as the shooter knows what one is.

A case like yours is incredibly risky, because at the time, as a new shooter.. if you had just shrugged your shoulders and thought i'll shoot another one to see if it does the same thing...

I had a squib on a black powder revolver some years back. It pays to keep a relatively fresh can of Pyrodex handy ... It was the 5th chamber, and the 6th was also a squib, fortunately. I was trying to dump the whole cylinder as fast as possible. I was young and dumb at the time.

Anyway. I did have an OOB firing on a Ruger 10/22 when I was a kid, too. I was shooting off a bench, with the front end of the stock supported by part of the bench, and my off-hand underneath the magazine. The bolt was still about 1/8" open when the round fired, and the side of it opened up like a tin can. Most of the force, fortunately, went out the ejection port. The rest went down around the magazine. I had the Ruger emblem from the bottom of the mag marked on my hand in powder burns for a couple weeks, and every now and then I still get small pieces of metal out of that hand underneath the base of the first and second fingers.

I do NOT want to have an OOB fire ever again.

I had an Out of Battery detonation with a 1911 once. It was with defective factory ammo and it basically blew the mag out the bottom of the gun, bulged the slide and cracked the barrel link. Hand stung like I had just hit a light pole with an aluminum baseball bat and my thumb got a nice chunk taken out by a peice of the brass casing.. Bled all over the place. I rebuilt the gun and still have it. Needless to say, I don't use that brand of ammo anymore.. (Not going to go there in a public forum as to the specific brand).

Never had one in a rifle (thank God). Trust me, they are no fun. I watched one happen in a Glock 21 (.45 acp) and it blew the right side of the frame open, blew the contents of the mag down to the ground and broke both locking block pins... poor guy shooting it had to get 10-12 stiches in his hand and a new pair of fruit of the loom's....
