"Have fun with it" ,A very good answer, And that is what we do with our firearms most of the time. If you want a serious weapon, I will give my opinion. I am old and very stuborn in my opinions. I believe that inless there are very certain circomstances to be met, the only changes to be made to an ak or ar is to have good sights and a good trigger plus any necessary modifactions to enhance relieability.

Sights shoud be good fast iron sights, unless your eyes require help, then any optic sight should be relatively fast on target and extreamely relialble.

As a young marine in vietnam, my greatest concern with my weapon was that I could get on a very close target fast (or should I say first) and that when I did that the rifle would fire. I only had to get on target with the safty off and pull the trigger. I carried a m-14 It was slower into the sights than a M-16 , but we didn't even know about stopping power orreliability. but the main thing was I only had to aquire the target, take off the safty and pull the trigger.

Do you really want to add options, that may run thru your brain during that split second.? Can you really convience yourself that you will notthink about a light switch, a laser switch, is my battery powered scope on?

etc. and what effect will the extra weight have on being first?

I know that law enforcement must have lights to ensure that a place is safe and secure for civilians. I also know the blinding effect that a light can offer. I learned what we called light disipline in the marine corps, It ment that if you use a light,you become a target for everyone within several hundred yards. So add only things that are absolutly necessary, maybe even have a weapon just for speed or should I say combat servival.

As long as I am talking alot I might add another item. Train to servive at close encounters, pratice shooting fast and close, My difination of close is everythingwithin about 40 yards because this is about the range that in the open you feel the presents of the enemy shooting at you personally and not just at those with you. You must be able to load and clear your weapon with out taking your eyes out of the game. said enough for one day, enjoy your new AK.

But they just look so damn scary with all that make-up on. I would have to say the AK iron sights are some of the greatest. That was one of the problems I had with my AR is I had already trained my eyes on the AK sight. If you are shooting at longer ranges its so quick and easy to use the bar adjust, and the visability you just can't beat.

But if you want to have the poop your pants effect when someone see's it f'ing go for it dude. I know I am going to at least put a high FOV dot sight on mine when it comes in.

Not going to post my usual rant on iron sights...did that on another post here already today. Will say this though, once you learn the AR/M series iron sight, you'll be whistling a different tune. I can't wait until you get back from basic and post up how simple and efficient those sights are.

These newer guys tend to rush into the scope thing before they stretch their legs and figure out how to use the open rifle sights. I've smashed a lot of optics devices and had to fall back on the old windage/elevation routine. I thank God for military training and experience at those times. I also strongly suggest you guys put in some range time to get to know your black rifle before you try out scopes or CQC/holo sights. It takes a bit more ammunition funding, but the trigger time is worth it. It is also basic, easier than you think and gives a sense of satisfaction a scope won't when you're tagging the bulls-eye at 100 yds with nothing but what the Lord gave you for optics.
