If I were in the market to buy another upper for my
AR, there would only be one choice --- 6.8
SPC. I think a lot of rifle manufacturers come up with these wildcat loads to niche their product. I'm wondering if the original thought was for a heavy hitting
PDW that brings 30 caliber energy into a smaller rifle platform?
Knight's
Armament developed the 6x35 for that reason and then developed the firearm around the round with great success. The way some of these manufacturers think is, well our .30 is bigger than your 6mm. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with Remington as it relates to the .30AR round. After doing a quick Google search (Google is your friend, usually) I found that Remington actually designed this round with intentions of it being wrapped by their own (not DPMS) rifles at first. Remington got into AR platforms to be used in hunting. The 6.8 SPC is a great deer round. The 308 doesn't fit an AR15 platform (must have the AR10). So, they seem to have had the idea to make a hunting round of their own designed for the AR15 magazines. Remington's AR platforms are the R-15 (5.56 cartridge) and the R-25 (.308 cartridge). The prior being born of Bushmaster loins. A R-15 platform with a second 30AR upper gives the owner a multi-purpose 30-30 Winchester like performance deer rifle in a rifle that is marketed as more of a varmint stick.
