While I can understand the "need" for certain add-on's for an AR-15, I am of the belief that the simpler you keep it, the better off you are. KISS. Period.
Now, that said, I do have an Aimpoint Comp ML-3 red dot sight attached atop the carry handle. Why? 1)Because my eyes ain't what they used to be, and I ain't above cheating to win a gunfight, and 2)if the red dot sight takes a dump on me, then all I have to do is drop straight down and use those beautiful, original, "old school" iron sights just like I was trained to do in U.S. Army basic training. KISS.
I also have a 3 point sling attached to my rifle. It allows me to do several things, if necessary, but the basic function of it allows me to carry my rifle at a modified 'port arms' or 'ready position' to shoot at an instant moment. KISS.
Some guys like to add lights so they can see the bad guys. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, there is just one drawback to that point, and that is that when you see him in the light, then he also knows exactly where you are at that same exact instance. That equates, in my mind, to no real advantage gained. But that is an individual preference. KISS.
K.I.S.S.=Keep It Simple Soldier. When it comes down to it, the simpler you keep it, the better your results are going to be. You start adding on all of those toys, then you have to stop, if just for an instant, to think about what you need to do with what and how. That will get you killed. The rifle was designed to "point-n-shoot". Anything you add that takes away from that very simple concept makes that piece of equipment a liability instead of an asset. Plus adding unnecessary weight to the forward end of the rifle and altering the balance of the basic function of the rifle. Keep It Simple Soldier!
This is just my humble opinion. Others may not see or agree with it, and that's okay. Different points of view are what makes the world go 'round!
