My range day with my AR? 458 socom....

Today I took the 458 socom to the range with my son to try it out. Surprisingly it's fun to shoot with the 300 gr. hp bullets to water bottles, milk jar with water....etc. I hit the milk jar filled with water watching it exploded into a cloud of water over 15 ft was priceless. Too bad I didn't think that would happen and didn't record it. But next time, I would have a video camera ready. The recoil is twice as much as the 223 round. But it is still manageable.

I believe it would have a LOT of stopping power with a heavier bullets. And it's legal to hunt deer in IN. Might be good for bears too, not sure. My son fired 5 rounds and complained his shoulder hurt..

Yes, I reload my own if the bullets are here. I ordered them today should be here in a few days. I have already deprimed, resized, and primed the spent cases. Just waiting for the bullets. Factory rounds are pretty expensive. I just bought a box of 20 SBR 350 gr with Barnes bullets for $64.99. Ouch! I also ordered 100 cases but they're in back-order. Now I have around 52 cases ready to finish. 20 new rounds in the box. Rock River has the 458 socom upper for sales now for $702.00. Just put in with your AR-15 lower.

I have read several articles on the .458 and I must say you are the first person that I know that has one. It seriously looks like it could drop an elephant. I can't remember all the specs of the top of my head for the distance and accuracy, I do know that it has a high performance rating, I envy you.

Ok, it's obvious that I'm not well versed on the .458 Socom. That being said, all I have to do is replace my upper with the .458 upper? Seems the buffer spring would need to be replaced with something a little heavier gauge...right? If not, how many rounds fired before you have to replace your existing buffer spring?

I really like this cartridge. I've read a lot on it throughout the internet since you posted this. It's kind of got me chomping at the bit. The only thing I don't like is ammo prices. Presently, I don't own a reloading setup and several dollars a pop for a round is steep. I mean, it's stepping into .338 Lapua and .50 cal territory. That's my only drawback, well, that and the $ right now.

I'd like to see how much that huge hunk of copper/lead makes a steel target move.

Yes, just remove your 223 upper and put the 458 socom upper on. You just have to replace the buffer spring on the stock. Took me less than 5 minutes, more like 2 minutes from start to finish. I replaced the buffer spring before I shoot it. I was told it would have less recoil. Unless you're like your username, recoil is nothing to you. I found out how hard it is to find the ammo. But the guy who sold it to me had like 46 rounds left and 10 spent cases. So, I just fired the 46 rounds and brought my Sig 229 to shoot afterward. And my order from Midwayusa came today. So, I reloaded 40 rounds of 300gr Barnes bullets. Also have a SBR 20 rounds from Midwayusa, so I have all together 60 rounds to shoot. I will have to bring a LOT of water bottles next time. It's more fun than punching papers.

What would be a good optic for the 458 socom, something that would hold up the zero with its recoils? I currently have a Eotech 512 on it, but I cannot really see the coke bottle at poor light condition clearly at further distance. I opted for something like a Nikon Monarch 3-9 power with BDC. Not sure if that would be a good choice tho.

The 458S is designed to work with a stockbuffer spring. The included springs are noted as optional andcan create some cycling problems depending on ammo.

Power; My carbine slightly out performs published Remington 45-70300gr hp ammo. Itexceeds by farthe published 405gr sp specs, using their same bullets in each instance. Recoil isat least equal to a 45-70 levergun. Stock buttplates aremeat grinders with that kind of power, Ihad toinstalla skeleton stock (with a pad) for long range sessions.

I use a Burris 3-9x40 for ammo development. A co-witnessed Eotech 512 sits on it at the moment.
