I am looking at getting a complete upper. My budget is 900. Don't need a BCG. Looking for a 16 inch. Still not sure if I want a middy or an m4 length. Fire away!

last opinion, if you have a $900 budget and want to get top of the line, get noveske. best of the best barrels, you just cant beat them.

Most FF's are only $50 to $75 more than their drop in cousins from the same manufacturer unless you go with a longer tube that free floats out over the gas block. Free floating can have benefits if you are shooting longer distances and hang accessories on your rails. Any reduced pressure induced on the barrel will improve accuracy at longer ranges. You won't notice much at CQB distances. If it helps by 1/8 MOA at 25 yards and that's where you shoot most of the time, I'd say no. But extrapolate that 1/8" out to 300 yards and it makes a difference.

I have built my share of ARs over the years, both for myself and customers. I keep ending up back at Stag. In my opinion their pricing and their quaility is top notch. I have yet to have a Stag lower, upper, or complete rifle fail me in anyway related to the manufacture. Their customer service is top notch too. I called them up recently because I had misplaced my fire control pins and they sent me a new set at no charge.

All of the Stag uppers and barrels that I have used have all shot 1/2 MOA and have never needed a "break in" period. The only down side is that all of their barrels are twisted with a 1/9. Which really isn't that big of a deal unless you're planning on sending heavy rounds long distances.

Nah since I am looking at a 16inch for my first AR 300 yards is good for me. I would get a different set-up if I was planning on reaching 600-700 yards. I want to have one that I can enjoy shooting and get use to the ar platform.

Rewind,

While I only utilize my AR carbine for short range shooting and have a drop in replacement rail, I really like the look of the free floated rail better. I should have added that in above. Having a monolithic top rail is pleasing to the eye and goes great with a fine wine and primo cigar.

In other words, I didn't mean to turn you off the free float just on one point of not doing too much for accuracy at close range. I may still upgrade mine just to enhance the look.

I like all the looks of the AR front ends. I built my latest CQB rifle without a free float but I've built my share of free floated uppers in the past.
