shamntgmry, I think the length of your action is a fixed dimension. Changing the length of the action means a new receiver, I'm afraid. But, a match quality barrel in 30-06 will serve you well. Just do the accutrigger at the same time to get the most from your new barrel.
Everyone, It was my privilege to serve, thank you.
An accutrigger retrofit is not something for anyone but a professional gunsmith. I had mine done right by a good professional.Recoil, I don't mean to flame you, but you are wrong about the Accutrigger. I mean no offense but people need to know facts, not conjecture. I took this from the Savage website, today:
"In centerfire
hunting models, muzzleloaders, the Model 40 Varmint Hunter,
and most rimfire models, the
AccuTriggerâ„¢
is adjustable from approximately 2 1/2 to 6 lbs. In the 12
Series Varmint and Law Enforcement Series, the AccuTrigger
is adjustable from approximately 1 1/2 lbs to 6 lbs."
My first experience with an accutrigger was on my .17HMR. It is a tackdriver with the best trigger I have ever seen on a cheap rifle. Come to think of it, it is better than the trigger on any mass-produced rifle I have ever fired.
Of course your gunsmith wouldn't set your old trigger in what he considered an unsafe weight.
The whole purpose of the 2-stage accutrigger is that the first stage of the trigger acts a a safety so it can be set to a lower weight. If you drop the gun, it is less likely to have an accidental discharge. Safe at 1.5 lbs., I have the Varmint trigger installed. I just like 2 lbs. 'cause any less isn't practical for hunting. Slamming the bolt home on a rifle with a "hair" trigger can result in an
AD. The accutriggers work, are cheap, and have set the mark in triggers for every single manufacturer of firearms to aspire to, as they are all sucking hind tit, now.
