the XD .40 subcompact is not a "single stack" pistol. It uses a two column magazine, just like the .45 XD, just smaller.
As far as other recommendations go, I would suggest a look at the Kahr Arms CW line of pistols (Cheaper than the "PW" series, but just as reliable and easy to carry/shoot). I have a CW45 in .45 ACP that is becoming my constant companion. It took about 150-200 rounds to break in, but once it did, it has not missed a beat. Easy to carry, simple to operate and accurate to the point of making 25 yard head shots on our qualification shoot last week... The CW series guns have less mechining than the PW series and they sell for about $470 in these parts... compared to the $690 price tag of the PW series for basically the same gun.
