So what's a good handgun, revolver or semi-auto, for less than $200? Can it be used as a CCW?

That is a hard question to answer. To say that a gun is worth X amount is hard to say. It all depends on the Brand, age, type, wearand caliber. You may find a great deal in todays economy from someone just trying to put food on the table by selling a firearm at a great loss. As far as a new pistol for $200 I can't think of one that I would use for self defense. For anything used for self defense you have to ask yourself,would I trust this with my, or my families, life?

When you look for a defensive weapon you need to consider some very important things.

It needs to be able to deliver a projectile capable of incapacitating or killing a human. It needs to be available to you. It needs to reasonably comfortable to operate. It needs to be reliable and you need to be proficient with it.

A baseball bat is cheap, reliable, and I am competent with it, but I wouldn't choose it for home defense unless I had nothing else available to me at the time.

Would you drive a $200 car?

A lot of people complain about High-Points. I cannot. I own a High-Point 9mm pistol. I've put over 1k rounds through it, and after you break it in, it works very well. Out to 70-100 yards its accuracy is OK. You can hit body mass to 100 yards.

You can get one for under $150 if you know where to get it.

My supervisor and another guy at work have hi ppoint .45s, they go bang everytime you pull the trigger, they seem to be fairly accurate, even if the sights are a little iffy. then the boss made the mistake of shooting the Kimber full sized pistol i have and bought a springfield. The issue I can see with the HP pistols is they are friggin huge. Not sure I would want to try and conceal one. He wants to sell his for $150 if anyone is interested, it has all of 20 rounds through it.

This thread got resurrected, dusted off, and reopened.

But, it's a good thread, and I've got something to add...

It's a little more than $200 stated in the OP, but the Kel-Tec PF-9 jumped into my hands for $280 brand new. It's small, light, 9mm, and handles like a dream. Hmmm, do they make women like that? Well, 9mm is a little small for that requirement.

I wouldn't skimp on something you'll bank your life on, but that being said, some good things come in small and reasonably priced packaging.
