I have no idea if this guy was prior military or not but that may have played a factor. The combat arms branches of the US Army and Marine Corps, as well as certain units in the US Air Force and Navy, are very good at instilling the Warrior Mind Set in new recruits.
The Police Academies around the country are not very good at this. In most cases, they are more focused on teaching laws and discipline than they are about keeping officers alive when the shit hits the fan. It is left up to the officer in most cases to develop the proper mind set.
I want to be very clear that it does not take military service to be a good officer. In fact, military service has some draw backs as an officer (public relations comes to mind). Some of the best officer's I know have not been in the military and they have earned my respect in several situations.
The one main difference I see is that military service forces the troop to make the determination that they are willing to pull the trigger to save their own life or the life of their buddies. A soldier in the Infantry or other combat arms branch knows in his heart that when the time comes he can kill the enemy. It doesn't always work out like that, but he has already settled the question of right or wrong before he is faced with the situation.
On the other side is the cop who went from high school, to college, and then to the academy. He has never had a drill instructor beat it into his head that the worst thing he could do in life is get a buddy killed because he can't act.
He has never had to face his true feelings about killing another human being. He may not even know what his true feelings about it are. He may have problems resolving it with his religion and his own moral code. Many Americans have been taught it is wrong to kill for any reason when they were groing up. That will cause them to try anything to get out of pulling the trigger when they should. The English translated the Hebrew word in the Ten Commandments as 'Kill'. The correct word in Hebrew is the word 'Murder'. Many Catholics and Protestants alike don't know this and can't separate the two.
Every officer should take a good hard look at himself and how he looks at his job. We are the ones who stand between the innocent and the murderers like the guy at
FT Hood. There is a reason we carry a gun and if you are not willing to take a life with it, then you should choose another profession.
There are times in this life when you are past the point of talking. At that point, you either act or you die. I would rather see someone leave the agency they are working for than go to another Officers funeral. I have seen enough of those.
