This morning at about 0130 hours, Phoenix PD lost an officer in the line of duty when he was shot while searching for a suspect related to a "shots fired" incident in which the suspect fled that scene. The officer and his partner were checking out a suspicious vehicle they believed may have been related to the previous "shots fired" call, that was parked in a driveway with a tarp partially covering it. The officer seperated from his partner and checked an area on the side of the house when he was shot and killed.
Officers on scene conducted a "downed officer rescue" and evacuated the injured officer to a local hospital in the back of a patrol car. The officer died shortly there after.
A perimeter around the suspect's location was created and SWAT was called out, where they tracked the suspect to a shed with the use of K9 officers. The suspect refused to comply with officers commands and "less lethal" stun bag munnitions (12 ga.) were used against him, causing his eventual surrender. He was taken into custody alive and uninjured.
The officer was young (20's) and had just became a father for the second time, two weeks ago.
The suspect is described as in his 30's with a lengthy felony rap sheet.....
Prayers and condolences go out to the family of the officer and those that knew and loved him. Phoenix PD is in mourning.
More to follow as information is released.
