Some really interesting pictures from a Russian photographer (Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii) that took these pictures from 1909-1912. He used an interesting technique of capturing three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images.

Russia and the former Block countries are a beautiful place.
I've flown in and around many of the ex-Soviet states over the last decade. Some are more beautiful than others. Here are some pictures from my personal stash to show the harshness of winter over there in the modern era.

.BTW, while these places are normally beautiful in the summer months, they are monochromatic all winter. I much prefer summer!

It's amazing how good the pictures look. I enjoy looking at old photos from before my time. So these were originally color in early 1900's? Thats impressive.
I have a book I purchased of my home town from around and before that time period,it shows the first bridges and hospitals and such even some of the first cars in my home town. Funny thing is their is a overlook that is a civil war area the wife and I took a picture from looking in the valley ,it tuns out their is a photo of that exact same spot it looks almost identical with the exception of it's more built up now.
