My favorite gun. The Uberti Cattleman in 45 Long Colt. Basically their clone of the Model 1873 Single Action Army. The famous 'Peacemaker'. I've owned other clones and wasn't impressed at all. But this Uberti piece is a gem.
The fit and finish is excellent all the way around. The black powder coat finish is very rugged looking. And those red wood hand grips are simply beautiful.
The action is stiff but smooth, and very precise. The cylinder lockup is the best I've seen on a revolver. The locking lug releases only after the cylinder has rotated to the point where it lands in the depressed channel leading to the lockup notch. So you don't get a cylinder ring. And when it does lock up, it does so crisp and solid. There is absolutely no play in the cylinder when its locked. None. And this is the only revolver I've ever owned I can say that about. The cylinder on my Taurus 38 special wiggles like a hula dancer.
The trigger, like the rest of the action is stiff, but relatively clean. There is just the slightest creep as you apply pressure, then it breaks sharply. I'm considering buying a set of Wolf replacement springs to see if I can lighten up the action a bit, but I have no complaints as it is.
The sights are authentic, if a bit clumsy to shoot. A notch in the top strap, and an oversized blade site in the front. Takes some getting used to. But it shoots pretty much dead on.
And there's nothing like that distinct 'boom' when you pull the trigger. When I take it to the range, I always gather some onlookers. Especially the day I took some black powder cowboy loads. That boom was accompanied by a cloud of smoke only a fireman could love.
My only complaint is with the caliber. Only because 45 long colts are really hard to come by these days unless you're willing to shell out some money. It's not uncommon these days to see them selling at a buck a shell for common, unjacketed lead. Not well suited to an afternoon of plinking.
And finally, I just couldn't resist the urge to park it in a nice custom made leather rig. Strap that puppy on and you're ready to go 'slap leather'.
