Ok, ive been heavily considering buying an XDm in .40 caliber. I have heard that these guns are extremely reliable and have an amazing grip, however i have not been able to find very much info on how accurate they are. anyone who has fired an XDm, how accurate is it at 25 yards (inch groups?). also i have been considering this as a cheaper alternative to a loaded 1911, is this a good move or should i just spend the extra money and get the 1911?

What are you going to use the gun for? The XDm might be a little fat as a carry gun. I have had my XDm 40 since May of this year and have about 2000 rounds through it with no issues. As far as groupings go, I am somewhat inconsistant. I have been struggling with my technique. I reload all my own ammo and a couple months ago I fired a squib, thought the round left the chamber so I cleared the round and fired another behind it. The round was still in the barrel. Some guns under the same circumstances would have grenaded but mine just had a buldged barrel. Sent it back to SA, they replaced the barrel and had it back to me in a week for 150.00 not including the shipping to the factory. Customer service was outstanding. Back to the accuracy thing. I have read other threads where people say thier guns are very accurate and on my 2nd USPSA match, I placed 18th out of 41 shooters so I guess it cant be to bad. I can also hit silhouettes at 50 yards just not every shot. Find a range local that rents guns. I shot an XD before I decided to ge the XDm. My next gun is going to be a Tanfoglio/EAA Whitness Elite Limited. They are supposed to be super accurate and are similar to a 1911 but with a doublestack mag. They are race guns in a box. I got to hold one and it really felt good. Try the XDTalk forums, lots of good info there. Also if you are looking to compete in USPSA you might want to consider 9mm. Its a little cheaper and easier to kep on target.

im not going to be using it for carry, probably just shooting at the range. I have considered renting one at the local range, but i know for a fact that they dont clean them, so im not sure it would be a good indication of accuracy if it hasnt been cleaned after 1000 rounds. i dont currently competition shoot but i might someday, however accuracy is still very important to me (not so much fun going to the range if my target looks like i was shooting a shotgun).

i have rented the XD at the range, i plan on renting the XDm soon if they have one, but like i said, i dont think its a great indicator of accuracy. i have thought about 9mm but i think .40 is more fun to shoot and it'll work better if someone breaks into my house.

I have shot the XD in .40 side by side with the Glock mod 22. The XD IMO had significantly less felt recoil, the grip was more comfortable. Both rugged guns. In my situation the Glock was chosen because it was how the dept. voted and they are very easy to work on if need be. Although I was biased toward the XD, I now carry a Glock 22 and I have no complaints. My next pistol purchase will be a Springfield XDm.

The accuracy issue - If you are looking for supreme accuracy buy a gun built for that or that can be built up to that. In general Glock, XD's, Sig P226, 220 etc. off the shelf are combat weapons not bullseye match weapons, not to say that they can't produce great groups.(hitting in the "x" ring vs. hitting the "X" in the ring) The 1000 round cleaning might not be a good indicator of accuracy, but it can say a lot about functionality, and if you are protecting your family functionality is a must. The XD's accuracy certainly won't embarrass you at the range. Most of the time I find that it is me that embarrasses myself at the range not the gun. (but we all have our off days right)

IMO if you want the best of both worlds the 1911 is a good way to go. I have a Kimber warrior and love it. (combat and accuracy proven)

I own a XD-40, can't get the M here due to hicap restriction - and my girlfriend has an XD-9 and a subcompact XD-9. I can tell you that will a little skill and practice the XD-40 is capable of 3" groups at 25yds. I know the M series has adjustable grip straps but the standard grip is already so comfortable to shoot there is hardly any difference in recoil between the 9mm and the .40 s&w. XD's are rock solid, easy to disassemble and clean, and will feed anything I've put through them. They are a little bulky for concealed carry but as a general sidearm, you wouldn't go wrong getting one.

hmmm...well it sounds pretty good, i mean if i aim at the x, as long as it can hit in the x ring or at least extremely close, thats good enough for me. still got some thinkin to do, but this helped, thanks guys.

I had a XDM 40 and loved it. It shot great with no issues. I wanted to use it for USPSA but decided to go with the XDM 9mm. I sent it to Springer Precision and had a few mods done. For a range gun, the 40 will do the job. If your not going to carry it, I suggest having a cleanup and a tactical trigger job done. I had the competition trigger done to the 9mm and it is sweet!
