I recently purchased a used "custom" 1911. It has a Caspian frame and slide and a Clarke barrel with a wafer/washer similar to what Nighthawk use,so there is no barrel bushing. . The full length guide rod is two piece. I can break the pistol down and reassemble, but there has to be an easier way than the struggle I had. Anyone know the proper procedure?

Repetitive motion.

The first time I broke down my wife's son-in-law's Kimber CDP, I about threw it through the window. I had similar frustration with a Ruger MkII P85 that I own. After some practice, it got easy. I now own a Kimber Custom II, and while it's not as easy to field strip as say my HK, it is much easier after some practice.

I also have a 1911 with a 2 piece guide rod.....I put Loctite on the rod because I didn't like it getting loose.......Anyway the pistol will break down as normal to start with by removing the slide stop, Make sure the hammer is down, Then remove the whole slide carefully forward - Barrel bushing, Spring cap, Guide rod and all.

It takes a little patience and care to get the hang of it and reassembling the pistol in same manner.

EDIT : I don't know anything about the Wafer/Washer.

The washer essentially takes the place of the barrel bushing It locks onto the equivalent of the recoil spring plug., My problem with the first disassembly was that I unscrewed the front half of the guide rod before I removed the slide and then the recoil spring really tried to kink and jump out of the room since it was still under pressure. During reassembly, I had to partially reinsatll the front half of the guide rod and then use all tree hands

to fit the rest of the guide in, hold all in place and then reinsatll the complete slide.

Insert 5/32 Hex wrench into the hex head at front of the Guide Rod below the muzzle.Unscrew the Guide Rod by turning clockwise Remove outer Guide Rod half from the handgun by pulling the Guide Rod half out of the handgun towards the muzzle end Pull the slide back to align the slide stop notch with the slide stop as you would on the standard guide rod and plug instruction. Unlike the standard set up, the slide will still be under tension
from the spring, so you will need to pull the slide back and hold it. This can be done by putting your thumb under the trigger guard and reaching over the slide with your right hand and holding the slide in place. Push the slide
stop with your left hand and slowly let the slide go forward and completely
come off the frame
Turn the slide over and remove the spring and other half of the recoil guide.
Pull the reverse plug out of the rear of the slide and push the barrel out the front.

Thanks LR, that was the procedure i used, but it was enough of a pain in the rear (especially on reassembly), that I used up a days quota of cussing. Gun shoots so well it is worth it though.
