This is a copy of an email I sent to the founder of Front Sight Resorts after watching a video on his weekly blog titled "Stop shouting and start shooting". If you are a member, instructor or gone there for training not trying to start a battle here just saying the way this was used, presented and the comments made are wrong.
I tried to post a link to the video but couldnt. If anyone can please feel free. The video can be seen at
www.frontsight.com and click on Monday Blogs for 1-18-10.
Dear Dr. Piazza,
I have watched with interest, apprehension and amusement the emails, gun training tips and blogs that I have received from Front Sight.
Each time I receive one the first thing I do is remind myself that this is your business and your business is to sell memberships to your resort through whatever means possible including the instilling of paranoia, fear, embarrassment, false bravado and my all time favorite Broadway dancer on the range shooting a sub gun in a revealing tank top while talking about how safe the ranges are. Some of the lessons and material are informative, innovative and most of all developed by others and used by you.
Some of the information contained in the messages I have enjoyed reading and watching but the video contained in the Monday blog of 1-18-10 has struck a particular cord with me.
The first thought that came to mind was how dare you sit back and armchair quarterback the actions of a police officer on a 12 year old videotape. Your comments introducing the video "There are times to stop screaming and start shooting" are a testimony to your absolute ignorance of the legal system, the mindset of the mentally disturbed, and what it takes to be a Law Enforcement Officer.
The officer conducts a traffic stop in what looks like to be a fairly remote location. The driver exits his vehicle without being told and the officer decides to bring the suspect back to him. Could it have been because of the dog in the cab of the truck?
The first few moments of the contact are normal with pleasantries exchanged and the officer approaching the suspect As the incident unfolds the suspects places his hands in his pockets and the officer places his hand on his weapon with his finger indexed on the trigger giving commands to the suspect to remove his hands from his pockets. At this point the suspects behavior goes from normal to bizarre, however strange behavior aside as soon as the suspect shows his hands are clear of weapons and begins to back off the officer removes his hand from his weapon as we were all trained back then to help in deescalation of the situation.
As the suspect charges the officer again grasps his weapon and indexes on the outside of his holster as he was apparently trained to do. As the episode continues off camera the officer continues to yell verbal commands to the suspect as he deploys his baton. At one point it sounds like a baton strike is used to keep the suspect off the officer.
The officer then upgrades his call for assistance and the suspect returns to his vehicle with the officer still holding his baton in a defensive position.
As soon as the suspect opens the truck door the officer drops his baton and draws his weapon because the threat level has now increased. The officer, who is now off camera, has again apparently assumed cover behind the door of his patrol car and has his weapon pointed at the suspect and continues to issue verbal commands to the suspect as he is supposed to do until the suspect displays a weapon. It is part of the Use of force continuum you should read it sometime.
ABSOLUTELY NO ACTIONS
ON THE SUSPECTS PART UP TO THIS POINT WOULD EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE USE
OF DEADLY FORCE.
The suspect is either under the influence of something or mentally disturbed or both and to use deadly force at this time would be unjustified and illegal.
As the video continues the officer has now seen the weapon and gives a command to "Put the gun down!"
THE OFFICER STILL DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE DEADLY FORCE
The weapon has not been fired or even pointed at him but you would have him stop giving commands and start shooting and if he had been through a Front Sight class or was a Gold, Silver or Bronze member would have ended the fight with a perfectly placed shot to the suspect.
The officer again calls for backup this time telling responding officers the suspect is armed. Depending on the officers knowledge of firearms he may see that it is a magazine
fed rifle he is up against and you can tell it in his voice he is afraid as would any person in the same predicament would be Front Sight graduate or not.
As the gunfight starts it appears that the officer has moved to the passenger side rear of his patrol vehicle to take the most advantage of the cover provided. The officer, once he sees the weapon pointed at him in a threatening manner, is now authorized to use whatever force necessary to stop his attacker and he fires the first shot.
You truly need to listen to your own teachings, your marksmanship ability decreases greatly in a real life event, no matter how good you are when the bullets are flying for real it is different from any training you receive. One of the officers rounds strikes the drivers side glass just behind the suspects head as he ducks down. That is pretty damn good shooting for someone who is alone, scared, outgunned and fighting for his life.
Could he have done better you bet, should he have done better you bet, did he fight for his life up to the last moment before being shot to pieces by an individual armed with a semi auto rifle at less than ten feet, you damn right he did.
The gunfight continues with each one popping up to take shots at the other. I could not positively identify either weapon but the officer appears to be carrying a semi auto pistol and the suspect a .30
cal carbine. Either way the officer is outgunned.
When the officer shoots his weapon to slide lock is when the suspect advances and begins firing at him behind the patrol car.
THESE ARE THE SCREAMS YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED WITH SIR. THE SOUNDS
OF A POLICE OFFICER BEING SHOT OVER AND OVER AGAIN SCREAMING
IN PAIN TELLING THE SUSPECT TO STOP SHOOTING HIM
Even after being wounded the officer is able to reload, begin firing again and move to a different position.
In the final portions of the gunfight the officer moves from the passenger rear to the drivers side. This is when the suspect charges again apparently striking the officer several times to the point he can no longer fight back and then making his escape.
I do not know what part of the country this video came from, whether the officer lived or died or the suspect was ever caught but I can say this in the last 12 years there have been vast improvements in law enforcement training and techniques. Officers today would not have been outgunned as many routinely carry patrol rifles in their vehicles and have the training needed to use them marksmanship training has taken on a more realistic and combat related approach, but the same basic rules on the use of force 12 years ago would apply today.
This video could and should be used for training to show what tactics and training were like in 1998, but for you to use the brutal shooting of a police officer as shock value to promote gold, silver or platinum memberships, which has already been done by Amway by the way, is inexcusable.
For you to preach that you train law enforcement officers from all over the country and have them on your instructor staff and then to introduce and make statements about this video in the way you did is shows your lack of knowledge, compassion and respect for the law enforcement community.
I do not care to know anymore of your background but apparently at one time you understood the meaning of honor, dignity and compassion. You obviously do not adhere to those principles any longer. You are the grand salesman now you have shown with the showing of this video and your comments you will do whatever is necessary to sell something.
Before you ask yourself who is this guy to question a Four Gun Combat Master and salesman such as yourself, I am merely someone who has been in uniform carrying a gun for over 30 years now and has experienced life from both sides of the gun with the last 4 years as an armed contractor in the middle east.
So before you post another blog I suggest you actually watch the video or read the subject matter before your assistant hands it off to you to sign off on it would keep you from looking like a complete idiot.
