The Russians Are Back In Cuba

Several decades ago, at the height of the Cold War, the Russians made a very aggressive move into Cuba, threatening U.S. national security interests. They did so in part believing that America’s young, charismatic president was weak and naïve. But John F. Kennedy stared down the Soviet threat and forced the Russians to leave the island. Facing another young, charismatic president who many believe to be weak and naïve, the Russians are back in Cuba today – this time threatening our economic interests.

Today’s Washington Times reports that while the Obama Administration is preparing once again to ban offshore drilling, Russia is getting ready to start drilling in the Gulf of Mexico to acquire the oil just off our shores. Here are some excerpts from the Times editorial:

“Offshore oil production makes economic sense. It creates jobs and helps fulfill America’s vast energy needs. It contributes to the gross domestic product and does not increase the trade deficit. …Americans understand the fundamental points: The oil is there, and we need it. If we don’t drill it out, we have to buy it from other countries.

“The Obama administration … views energy policy through green eyeshades. Every aspect of its approach to energy is subordinated to radical environmental concerns. …But we have not yet reached the green utopia, we won’t get there anytime soon, and America needs more oil now.

“Russia more sensibly views energy primarily as a strategic resource. Energy is critical to Russia’s economy, as fuel and as a source of profit through export. Russia also has used energy as a coercive diplomatic tool…

“It may not be as dramatic as the Soviet Union attempting to use Cuba as a missile platform, but in the energy wars, the message is the same. Russia is projecting power into the Western Hemisphere while the United States retreats. The world will not tolerate a superpower that acts like a sidekick much longer.”
The administration’s policy of denying access to our own resources only makes sense when you understand that it wants $7 a gallon gasoline.

Obama Strikes The Colors

You might want to sit down for this story. USA Today reported this week that the Obama Administration has ordered U.S. military personnel in Haiti not to fly the American flag. Here’s the official explanation for this outrageous decision, “We are not here as an occupation force, but as an international partner committed to supporting the government of Haiti on the road to recovery.”

That’s the most absurd statement I’ve heard in a long time. Everyone knows why we are there, what we are doing there and why the United States of America is shouldering the overwhelming majority of the burden. By the end of January, the United States had given $180 million in aid to Haiti. And what about our “international partners”? Well, they’re all still proudly flying their flags. Apparently, the French, British and the Croatians aren’t worried about being perceived as occupiers.

Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton has referred to Barack Obama as “the first post-American president.” Bolton is on to something. Obama seems to be fundamentally uncomfortable with America. From his world apology tour to bowing to foreign kings, kowtowing to despots and refusing to wear a flag lapel pin, Obama appears to have embraced the anti-Americanism he heard in Jeremiah Wright’s Sunday sermons.

There appears to be a deliberate attempt to reorient American foreign policy away from our traditional allies, such as Great Britain and Israel, whose values are rooted in Western civilization, and toward Third World nations, many of which are hostile to Western values and declared enemies of the United States.

Sunday Vote On Socialism

According to the latest reports, the House of Representatives is likely to hold a rare Sunday vote on the president’s socialized medicine scheme. Barack Obama has reportedly cancelled his overseas trip in order to “stay in Washington for a possible Sunday vote.” Just in case you had any reservations about the criticisms being leveled against the legislation, or the process being used to ram it through, consider the following statements:

“While deeming, like reconciliation, has been used … in the past, the context in which it would be used in this case leads me to conclude that it would poison an already terribly partisan atmosphere and leave the Congress even less able to find bipartisan solutions to fiscal problems that are on the verge of becoming overwhelming.” “It’s disingenuous. It would really call into question the credibility of the House.” “If President Obama and the [liberals] repeat the mistakes of the health insurance mandate on a national level, they will bankrupt this country within four years,” Cahill said. “It is time for the President and the [congressional] leadership to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new plan that does not threaten to wipe out the American economy.”
What do these statements have in common? All were made by Democrats (sort of). The first two were from Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) and Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA), referring to the “Slaughter solution.” The last quote comes from Massachusetts State Treasurer Tim Cahill, who was a Democrat until last year. He’s now an independent.

As we have noted before, the only “bi-partisan” aspect of ObamaCare is the opposition to it. Yet, Obama, Reid and Pelosi insist on ramming it down our throats by any means necessary, even if it “poisons the atmosphere,” “questions the credibility of the House” and threatens to “bankrupt this country.”
