The Ohio Department of Veterans Services (ODVS) is diligently creating an application process so that eligible veterans can request the bonus that was overwhelmingly approved by Ohio voters last November.
Nobody can accurately predict when ODVS will be able to tell eligible veterans to begin applying for the bonus and when the first checks will be mailed. Based on the experiences of other states however, ODVS hopes to be able to accept applications from eligible Veterans in September and begin mailing the first checks later this fall. Then, the process will continue as more applications are received and processed.
Several crucial but time-consuming steps are underway:
Computer
software and programs are being created to review the applications and determine eligibility.
Staff is being trained to process the applications that will come from an estimated 200,000 veterans who are Ohio residents.
When applications are submitted, all information must be verified with military and other records to ensure that veterans are eligible and that they are applying for all that they have earned.
In the meantime, the Ohio Public Facilities Commission is taking the necessary steps so that the bonds which will finance the bonuses are created, advertised and sold to investors.
ODVS wants to ensure that the application process is user friendly for our Ohio veterans and that our veterans get the service they deserve.
ODVS will use the news media, this Web site and various other communications vehicles to tell eligible veterans when it is ready to receive their bonus applications.
The Ohio Department of Veterans Services wants the bonus application and approval process to be easily understood, accurate and efficient.
We are not yet accepting bonus applications. However, some general eligibility information follows. More information will be available in the coming weeks as we prepare to launch the Ohio Veterans Bonus.
If you meet all of the following criteria, you may be eligible to receive the Ohio Veterans Bonus.
· You served in the United States Armed Forces on active duty for purposes other than training between August 2, 1990 and March 3, 1991 or any time since October 7, 2001.
· You were an Ohio resident at the start of active duty service and also when you apply for the bonus.
· You have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions, or remain in active duty service or remain in any reserve component of the armed forces including the Ohio National Guard after active duty service.
· You have not received a Persian Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan bonus from another state.
The amount of the bonus payment eligible veterans will receive varies based on the following payment conditions.
· Eligible veterans will receive $100 for each month spent on active duty service in the following theaters during these dates:
a. Persian Gulf between August 2, 1990 and March 3, 1991;
b. Afghanistan since October 7, 2001, or
c. Iraq since March 19, 2003.
The total benefit for all in theater service is $1,000.
· Eligible veterans serving on active duty (except active duty for training only) anywhere else during the above specified dates will receive $50 a month up to a total benefit of $500.
· Partial months of service during the compensable period will be paid at the rate of 1/30 of the monthly rate per day served: $3.33 per day for service in the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan theaters and $1.66 per day for all other active duty service.
· Veterans may receive a maximum benefit of $1,500 for service during the compensable periods.

Wow, that's awesome. I wish 'Bama would implement such a good deal. Hell, we can't even get roads paved...much less paper and pencils for school houses.
